Up and about with Care Forward

FIVE-YEARS-AGO Maggie Mueller was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatism and prescribed strong medication to control her pain.

Now she is drug and pain free and enjoying an active life thanks to the Care Forward ‘Up and About Program’.

After joining only 12-months-ago, Ms Mueller said her experience had been “like a miracle.”

“I could barely get out of bed when I was diagnosed,” she said.

“I would be so stiff in the morning that it would take me an hour-and-a-half before I could move properly.

“When I came here, for the first three-months I struggled, but then I started to feel really good and weaned myself off the medication.

“Now, through this program, I have no pain.

“The environment is very safe with great staff who are correcting every wrong move you make.

“It’s really great with like-minded people and it’s fun, so it’s very motivating.”

The success of this program has led to Care Forward expanding its premises in Rosny Park to include a Wellness Centre, which was officially launched last month.

Care Forward chief executive officer Wendy Edwards said its aim of care was to maintain independence and empower clients to make the most of their life at home.

“We’ve had people who weren’t able to climb the stairs at home because they weren’t physically able to or they were scared of a fall who can now do so,” she said.

“Many clients who haven’t accessed the community for a long time because of their strength and balance and confidence now can.”

The Care Forward Wellness Centre is a space dedicated to providing support to individuals and groups in activities that increase strength, mobility and confidence in a fun and inclusive environment.

It will provide a venue for the Up and About Program, group and individual exercise classes, information sessions on chronic disease management, cardiac health and nutrition, private consultations and support the company’s staff wellbeing program, THRIVE.

“The opening of the Wellness Centre is a first step towards increasing access to our team of dedicated health professionals,” Ms Edwards said.

“We have big plans for the centre.

“We will continue expanding it to include consulting rooms for a range of allied health services such as continence nursing and nutrition advice.”

Care Forward is a Tasmanian-owned and operated company specialising in services that increase the independence of senior Tasmanians.
