The ultimate power trip for young girls

YOUNG Eastern Shore trailblazers will have an opportunity to win a once-in-a-lifetime “power trip” to the nation’s capital through Country to Canberra’s prestigious 2017 Leadership Competition.

Now in its fourth year, the competition prize will give at least 10 young women the chance to rub shoulders with politicians and CEOs, undergo leadership and public speaking training and experience a tour of Parliament.

Country to Canberra chief executive officer Hannah Wandel said the competition was about showing girls that there was no limit to what they could achieve.

“From Julie Bishop to Tanya Plibersek, our past Tasmanian winners have met inspiring leaders, built confidence and have gone on to make an incredible impact in their local communities,” she said.

“We target high school because it’s a critical time in a young woman’s leadership pathway.

“We also know that distance, time and funding barriers can make life tough for rural students.

“Through our competition and prize, we provide access to training and mentorship, no matter a girl’s background and no matter how far away she lives.

“It’s also an amazing opportunity to connect with other young, rural go-getters.”

To enter the competition, Country to Canberra is asking girls to submit either a two-minute video or 400-words answering the question: “From primary school to Prime Minister, how can we create strong pathways to power for women?”

The Tasmanian winner from 2016, Imogen House, praised the initiative’s impact.

“It was life-changing and inspired me to go after my goals and advocate for what I believe in,” she said.

Competition winners will also score mentoring sessions and access to Country to Canberra’s alumni network.
