International gold for young trampoline gymnast

LOCAL gymnast Eddy Rand snagged the title of Scalabis Cup champion alongside his three team mates during the international championship event, held in Santarem, Portugal in July.

The 17-year-old from Clifton Beach was among nine Australian trampoline gymnasts who travelled to Santarem to compete against 16 countries for the title.

The junior men’s trampoline team – comprising of Matthew French, Eddy Rand, Patrick Scluter and Dylan Hill – displayed a set of eight routines to narrowly defeat the local Portuguese team for the title of the Scalabis Cup champions.

State coach Ben Kelly said he was proud of the way the team performed.

“Despite not necessarily having the highest degree of difficulty, the four Tasmanian gymnasts stepped it up a notch to display well prepared and confident routines to prevail with the championship title,” he said.

“The team managed to win the event, defeating teams from Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Kazakhstan.”

The competition was part of an international training and development tour organised by the Kingborough Gymnastic Club and Launceston PCYC to provide international experience and exposure to its gymnasts and coaches.

Portugal is a leading gymnastics nation, having won numerous World Championship titles in Double-Mini, as well as being well represented at the Olympic Games and World Championship level for Individual Trampoline.

“The event was a great opportunity for the team, providing them with additional competition experience outside of the Pacific and Oceania region,” Mr Kelly said.

“The European region is a dominant force within the sport and to be able to compete at this level and achieve a team result is a fantastic boost for the confidence of the local gymnasts.”

Following the competition, the Australian team also participated in a short training camp alongside the Portuguese team and gymnasts from Spain and Belgium.

They then travelled to Belgium for a second training camp with Olympic hopeful Loic Lenoir.
