Fun and fitness at every age

WHEN it comes to fitness, age is just a number and certainly not a barrier.

At least that is the belief of award-winning personal trainer Cindy Smith, who holds a special passion for helping older generations regain their strength, flexibility and coordination.

It is with this ethos in mind that Ms Smith runs a number of “senior-friendly” fitness classes at the Clarence PCYC, including classes specially designed for school groups and people with disabilities.

Class options include outdoor circuit, aerobics and resistance, indoor circuit training, ‘box and ball’, Zumba GOLD and ‘teengym’, with all lessons specially designed to provide “functional and fun” fitness for any age, Ms Smith said.

“My outdoor circuit training adopts a combination of weights including kettle bells, dumbbells and slam balls, as well as cardio such as skipping, running, battle ropes and boxing,” she said.

“All exercises can be modified to suit each participant and thanks to the club’s fenced synthetic grassed area, everyone can enjoy the fresh air as they work out.

“Another popular choice is my box and ball class, which includes 30-minutes of boxing, coordination and upper body strength, followed by fitball training to develop legs and core strength.

“However, if you feel that classes aren’t your thing, then I also offer a number of personal training sessions which provide one-on-one coaching and support.”

A member of Clarence PCYC for most of her life, Ms Smith said the not-for-profit organisation’s clubrooms offered a “very warm” and “non-intimidating” environment.

“There is ample free parking and a portion of all my class payments go to supporting the club,” she said.

Teengym classes cost $3, with all other classes costing $8.
