Fort Direction’s future guaranteed

DEFENCE investment of $2.8 million in Fort Direction will ensure its ongoing viability, Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz says.

The Minister for Defence, Senator Marise Payne, recently visited Fort Direction, highlighting the strategic importance of the facility and the Federal Government’s commitment to the area.

The investment will be spent building a new administration complex with 95 per cent of the value to be awarded to local contractors.

This will maintain a viable defence industry and ensure the upkeep of Fort Direction for its annual dawn services.

“This is a wonderful vote of confidence in Fort Direction’s future by the Liberal Government, noting that it was slated for closure by the previous government,” Senator Abetz said.

“Senator Bushby’s endeavours on behalf of the Tasmanian Liberal Senate Team to keep Fort Direction open has been absolutely vindicated with this latest investment.”

The building works should be completed within six months.
