Costume library is a big hit during Book Week
STUDENTS at several Eastern Shore primary schools enjoyed a costume library and a pick a book activity recently during Book Week, thanks to a community initiative focused on child literacy and inclusion.
Coordinated by Independent Franklin MP David O’Byrne and community volunteer Ange Briant, the costume library included of hundreds of costumes distributed to six participating schools.
Around 2000 high-quality books were also provided to schools for a pick a book activity, allowing students to choose a book to take home and keep.
Participating schools this year were Rokeby Primary School, Warrane Primary School, Clarendon Valey Primary School, Risdon Vale Primary School, St Cuthbert’s Catholic School and Kingston Primary School.
Mr O’Byrne said the costume library and pick a book activity aimed to ensure all students could join in with book week activities.
“Our community is fortunate to have a person like Ange who is so passionate about children’s literacy,” he said.
“This is a passion I share, and my office is pleased to coordinate the distribution of the costumes and books for Book Week.
“Book Week is a wonderful celebration in our schools, but the cost and time pressures can make it difficult for some families to participate.
“By providing a costume library we can take some of the pressure out of Book Week making it more enjoyable for everyone.”
