Clarence gymnasts take the winning leap

YOUNG members of the Clarence Gymnastics Association recently put their best foot forward when they competed in the Junior State Championships, held at the Kingborough Sports Centre from 12-13 September.

The championships offer level three, four and five Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) participants the chance to compete for the title of state champion.

Clarence Gym Association vice president Rachel Barnes said Clarence had teams entered in all three categories.

“We are very proud of the manner in which all of our gymnasts competed and supported each other,” she said.

“After so much commitment and training – up to 12-weeks for some team members – the gymnasts were keen to represent their club.”

The gymnasts were divided into two age groups and competed on four different apparatus – floor, beam, vault and uneven bars.

They then received an award from first to sixth, with the highest scoring participant for each level (irrespective of age group) being crowned state champion.

From Clarence, Charlotte Barnes was crowned state champion in the WAG level four U10 overall, with Hallee Sheen coming in a close third.

“The level four gymnasts performed extremely well with a total of 10 teams from throughout Tasmanian competing in the event,” Ms Barnes said.

“We would also like to congratulate Isabel Calvert for being selected in the Tasmanian level six team to compete in the Transbass Competition against Victoria and South Australia, which will be held in Geelong next month.”
