Talking Herbs-the alternative medicines.

HERBS are the gentle alternative for every day ailments. They have been
used successfully for hundreds of years, so what better recommendation.

Herbs are taken either as tablets or liquid extracts and often act synergistically, which means they act together to benefit the healing process. Herbs have more than one constituent and these may complement each other in their action. There are herbs specific to all areas of the body. There are respiratory herbs, digestive herbs, immune herbs, anti inflammatory herbs, anti-allergy herbs, nervous system herbs, skin herbs and herbs that help maintain energy levels or help with sleep.

Two which are most beneficial at this time of the year and are very well known are:

Echinacea purpurea: Very useful for the treatment of upper respiratory infections being antiviral and antibacterial. It is especially helpful in those with weakened immunity such as those under going chemotherapy.

Allium sativum: (Garlic): this herb has antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. It is an expectorant and is beneficial in bouts of acute or chronic bronchitis. It has cholesterol lowering activity and kills bad bacteria in the gut. It may also assist in the reduction of high blood pressure. One effect to be aware of is its anti-clotting activity. This means that any one taking anticoagulants should not take garlic as a medicinal herb.

Eleutherococcus senticosus or Siberian ginseng: This herb belongs to the group we call adaptogens and is like a ‘tonic’ in that it boosts energy levels and stamina, particularly after illness or even just day to day. It improves mental and physical performance, minimizes stress and is also an immune system enhancer.

Doses for herbs should always be checked with a professional health practitioner as therapeutic doses vary for each herb and some have cautions for certain  health conditions.
