Aquatic Education – More than Learning to Swim
OVER the past two years the YMCA has implemented its unique aquatic education program called AquaSafe to the Clarence Aquatic Centre YMCA.

Centre manager Mark Guy says the main defining difference with other swimming teaching programs is AquaSafe combines water safety education and skill development with personal development and doesn’t just concentrate on teaching the swimming strokes.

The program also places an emphasis on simulating open water environments, as well as building awareness about the risks of drowning.

Since its inception, the Aquasafe program has grown rapidly and now caters for 800 children and adults each week who participate in lessons after school or on weekends.

The vast majority of participants are from the Clarence municipality. In addition to these weekly classes, the 11 private schools who conduct their two week swimming program at the Clarence Aquatic Centre YMCA each year are also taught using the Aquasafe program framework.

“Over the last 18 months the Centre has experienced a 300% increase in the weekly class numbers. I now employ two full-time and 16 casual staff on a seven-day--week basis to operate the program.

“We run a very professional program which provides a definitive pathway for children aged three years right through to an elderly lady who is learning to swim for the first time in her life. It is a real credit to all the staff involved with the program. They have taken ownership of the program and are very capably lead by Nicole Ahearne, the coordinator of the Aquasafe program,” Mr Guy said.
