| Boat crew makes mark in nationals |
|
THE Clifton Beach surf boat crew pulled off one of the surprises of the 2007 Australian surfboat open by reaching the finals of the reserve grade. The 2007 Australian surfboat open was held in Lorne over the February long weekend. With more than 150 boats competing, it was the largest surfboat event ever held in Victoria. The crew of Matt Pooley, Chris Atkinson, Phil Jarvis and Michael Jarvis only decided to compete in the open event in January. The Fairhaven surf life saving club in Victoria made entry possible by offering both a boat and the services of one of the legends of the sport, Ron Diamond. ‘Ronnie’ has been sweeping surfboats for over 20 years. With his coaching and experience in the boat, the crew saw results. They finished second in the last heat of round robin competition - enough to earn them a place in the quarterfinals the next day. Conditions on finals day at Lorne were so tough that competition was moved to Torquay. Crews still faced challenging waves with 1.5 to 2.5-metre swells and onshore winds of between 40 to 50 knots. Lane draw became all important. Clifton Beach was unlucky to draw lane six and just missed finishing in the top three and a semi finals’ spot. Back home, the crew will compete at Penguin and at the state surf life saving championships at Clifton Beach. Event details are available from the Surf Life Saving Tasmania website www.slst.asn.au.
