Alex is the man to help grow your vegies
ALEX Milne’s love of establishing vegie patches has prompted him to start a great community business to help others grow their own vegetables. Alex, who grew up on a farm in the Derwent Valley and now lives on an acreage at Penna where he grows his own vegetables, has established his business helping others grow their own vegetables.

Just seven years ago, Alex’s love of gardening was formalised by undertaking a TAFE certificate III  in horticulture focusing on herb production.  He recently completed a diploma in horticulture at TAFE Tasmania where he majored in landscaping.

He is manager of Hortech landscaping which involves a range of horticultural tasks, including formal design and garden structure work.

Alex also works a couple of days a week at the New Town Station Nursery and is involved in a wide range of horticultural activities including passing on his horticultural advice and being up to date with the new varieties of vegetables.

“At Newtown Station Nursery, I began to notice that vegetables seedlings were becoming more and more popular,” Alex said.

“I also found that there are a lot of people who aren’t quite sure what to plant or just don’t have the time to install a vegie patch.

“So I have started Instant Vegie Gardens so that I can help people establish a vegie garden and also enjoy the benefits growing their own vegetables.”

Alex knows that the price of vegetables is a constant burden on the grocery bill,

“If you can grow it at home then you drastically reduce your costs and benefit from organically grown produce,” he said.

“A lot of younger people are not exposed to growing their own vegetables and soon this pastime may be lost.

“It’s time the vegie patch took pride of place in our gardens and not be hidden with designer gravels and uninspiring plants.

“By helping others establish a vegetable garden I am hopig that they can, in turn, pass on their excess produce to their friends, family and community.

“Vegies for everyone, I say!”
