Motorists urged to comment on roundabout work
EASTERN Shore commuters are being encouraged to examine plans for the upgrading of the Mornington Roundabout as the State Government moves to resolve what is a major traffic headache for peak-hour motorists. Details of the project will be on display for a limited time at the Eastlands Shopping Centre from 19 to 20 June and at the Clarence City Council Chambers from 19 to 27 June. And residents can comment on the proposed works.

The Department of Infrastructure Energy and Resources (DIER) says the plans have been developed following detailed traffic surveys and computer modelling and the Government will spend $1.6 million to improve the traffic flow operation.

Construction is planned mainly for the summer school holiday period to minimise inconvenience for motorists, and the work will be completed by the beginning of the 2009 school year.

The Mornington Roundabout has been an irritant for motorists for some time, with increased traffic coming from McKillop College and the Mornington Industrial Estate causing long delays for peak-hour vehicles on the South Arm Highway and Cambridge Road. Many mornings during the school year, see traffic banked up for more than a kilometre from the roundabout back towards Howrah.

It is understood that the works include the construction of a slip road and dedicated turn lanes. However, with morning traffic on the South Arm Highway forced to give way to vehicles travelling west off Cambridge Road, this is unlikely to provide much relief and traffic coming from the ever-expanding Mornington Industrial Estate will continue to compound the difficulty.

As commuters from Howrah, Rokeby and Lauderdale are most affected by the current traffic delays, an information display at the Shoreline Shopping Centre probably would have reached more direct stakeholders and attracted more comment.

Nevertheless the limited public display does provide the opportunity for commuters to comment to DIER and motorists should make sure they have their say in the hope of achieving a workable outcome.

Eastern Shore Sun urges all residents directly affected to make sure they take part in the consultation. If you would like more information or wish to comment on the project, you can either attend the public display or contact the project manager, Gunadasa Ginneliya,
