Youth conference gives Kana special experience
 By  KANA MANIWA*

‘United Nations youth conference’ – when I heard its name for the first time, I couldn’t understand what it was about because I had never had such a wonderful opportunity out of school in Japan.

In the conference, we had a lot of discussions and had pre-General Assembly, pre-Security Council, pre-UNESCO, and pre-Human Right.
I belonged to the pre-Security Council.  There were my first experiences of arguing the resolutions like real ones.  I had taken part in some debates in Japan when I was a member of Akashi-Juku which was established by Yasushi Akashi who was the administrative vice-minister of the United Nations.  Yet, this time, the conference had much more reality and was much more serious.

I represented Indonesia and I argued my opinions with Indonesian eyes.  I was very happy to talk about my thoughts about the world disasters nowadays like the world increasing population, the systems of the Security Council, and so on.

On the other hand, I felt dejected when we discussed Japanese whaling because I couldn’t argue anything.  I was upset as other students knew much more about it than me, even though I was Japanese.  I got so embarrassed and I realised that I would have to research it and study it, especially as it is a problem between Australia and Japan.

This conference was actually very hard but I had a good time.  I learned many things there, how to argue in the General Assembly and the Security Council, how to contact other countries during debate and so on.

Needless to say, I made friends there.  Some students were very interested in Japan, so I talked a lot about my country, which was really fun.

One lady who supported this conference told me that I made the conference deeper because I had very glad to hear that and I got some different opinions from Australian views, which let me broaden my horizons.

It was definitely my aim in my life to exchange different ideas with people from different back grounds.  I’d like to study hard and to know everything that happens in the whole world.

Someday I’ll join the United Nations and I’d like to help people find more happiness, which is my dream forever.  I really appreciate all the people who helped me at the conference and gave me such an awesome experiences.
