The competition, now in its fifth year, aims to encourage students and their families to consider the value of water and the importance of water conservation methods. Clarence Mayor Jock Campbell said the competition was part of an ongoing strategy by Council to educate the community about the importance of water as a precious resource.“With an increasing population and finite water resources it makes sense to work to conserve this immensely valuable resource,” Alderman Campbell said. The competition gives students an opportunity to create posters based on reasons and methods that relate to conserving water. Students from 17 schools in the City participated and the major prize winners were: • Brent Cruse from Warrane Primary– Kindergarten to Grade 2 section. • Sarah Tinning from Howrah Primary School – Grades 3 and 4. • Eilish Eagling from Emmanuel Christian School – Grades 5 and 6. The prize winners each won a $100 gift voucher from Eastlands and a water-saving prize valued at $100 for themselves, and a $200 trade centre voucher for their school. Highly commended prizes were also awarded to 18 students, who received a water-saving prize pack valued at $50 for themselves, and a $50 trade centre voucher for their school. Ald Campbell presented the students with their prizes at The Rosny Farm, and the posters were on display at council chambers. Clarence City Council introduced the state's largest recycled water scheme in 2006 initiating a range of programs to educate the community on the importance of conserving water.
