| Working smarter in the garden when it’s cold |
|
By HEATHER BUTLER WELL it’s starting to cool down now and motivation is getting harder to come by! So don't work harder, work smarter. The mulch you put on in the year now has a nice crop of weeds in it. Don't pull them out by hand, do use a rake or hoe to lift and break the weeds off and let them rot in place. After all they are organic. Don't spend hours raking the Autumn leaves off the grass. Do run the lawn mower over them, even those on the paths and driveways if necessary. The mulch from the catcher can go straight onto the garden, as the leaf component stops the grass from going too soggy. Don't waste your vegie patch if you aren't going to use it this Winter. Do put in a green manure crop that can be dug in to give you the best soil in Spring. Don't do the work yourself if you can bribe anyone else to do it for you!! Last time I checked, most grandkids were still susceptible to lashings of chocolate topping on ice-cream!! For those of you with glasshouses or poly tunnels, once your last crops have finished, don't forget to do a good clean out especially if you haven't done it for a while. The pests and diseases build up quickly in warm, dry conditions. Make sure you remove all plant material, including the weeds which are host plants to pests and diseases. To fix the pests you could use a pest 'bomb' available from supermarkets or spray every nook and cranny with an eco-oil or soapy water spray. DON'T forget to stop and enjoy those cold, breath-misting mornings and snuggle in front of the heater evenings. The best thing about Tassie is that we do actually have proper seasons! Cheers and good gardening
