Tranmere townhouse wins national award
TASMANIAN builder Scenport Pty Ltd has received national recognition, winning the 2008 Housing Industry Association (HIA) award for the townhouse and villa development of the year. Scenport’s entry for a townhouse development at Tranmere on Hobart’s Eastern Shore, won the award in competition with builders and developers from around Australia. It is the first time this award has been won by a Tasmanian builder.

Scenport was also runner up in the national house of the year award.

General manager Valdon Orr said winning the national award provided valuable recognition for the company’s commitment to innovative design and quality workmanship.

“The development of the three townhouses is at the leading edge of technology and creative design and the HIA judges commended the innovative use of materials, clever use of space and energy efficiency design measures,” Mr Orr said.

Construction manager Scott Glanville said the company’s brief from the client was for an up-market townhouse development with each home having three bedrooms all with built-ins, double lockup garage and open living spaces.

The townhouses are of blockwork construction and finished in textured render. They feature high ceiling spaces and generous open living areas to capture the stunning views of the River Derwent and Hobart from the internal block site on a steep hill.

Mr Glanville said the townhouse development offered a unique blend of contemporary luxury living in an exquisite setting with spectacular views.

“There is a generous amount of land around each dwelling, with plenty of recreational areas, including lawn, landscaped gardens, pebbled paths and courtyards,” he said.

“The development features initiatives such as fully retractable sliding doors leading onto the deck, bringing the outside in, and the continued innovative use and placement of glazed panels, windows and wide openings throughout to provide a balance of light, cross ventilation and views.

“The streamlined contemporary kitchen design, includes stone benchtops, glass splashbacks, the latest appliances and a generous pantry larder.

“We have made the best use of the available space with the internal living rooms opening up to the outdoor deck creating a wonderful entertaining area.”

Mr Glanville said all three townhouses were separately unique in levels, layout and features, yet had been designed to sit together in the local environment.

“The designs act to blur the boundaries between inside and out, providing easy access to the outdoors. Natural light, cross-ventilation, neutral colours and the materials employed all combine to give the townhouses a distinctive character while allowing them to blend into the natural bush setting.”

Mr Glanville said the HIA award would encourage Scenport to continue to strive to deliver innovative and well-designed high quality housing and building construction solutions for Tasmania.
