Life’s a beach as art merges at Dodges Ferry
IN a stunning new gallery perched on the edge of one of the most beautiful surf beaches in Tasmania is an exhibition of two local Dodges Ferry artists, painter Helen Jessup and furniture designer/maker Jon Hemming. The influence of living in this area is a feature of their art.

The gallery is 1 on Park, at 1 Park Beach Road and the exhibition is called MERGE to reflect both the separate interpretations of the coastal environment as well as the integration of the two mediums.

Helen’s work represents the dynamic Tasmanian environment that inspires her and where she has lived, loved and worked for most of her life. The paintings feature seascapes and images representing the Southern Beaches area’ including both people and place. There are also some pieces inspired by other areas in Tasmania.

Jon’s furniture has a mix of influences ranging from the coastal environment in which he now lives to a reaction to the killing of a possum by bow and arrow and the urban landscape of Hong Kong.

Jon and Helen have been friends and colleagues for many years and with their respective partners live at Dodges Ferry which provides the freedom and connection with the physical environment that inspires their respective work.

Both have history working in the human services arena.  Helen worked in child protection and youth justice and considers herself a survivor of that world having escaped the formal workplace last year. She is now fully engaged as a painter, spending her time between Southern Beaches and Central Queensland where she winters at Yeppoon.

Jon made a return to education in 1986 studying furniture design at the Tasmanian School of Art. He has been a practicing furniture designer/maker since that time working on one off pieces for exhibition, small scale production work and work to commission for individual clients. Both Helen and Jon have experience as teachers in TAFE, where Jon is currently employed in teaching wood design.

In March last year they collaborated in an exhibition where they produced complementary works inspired by the coastal environmental features Helen’s paintings capture visual imagery of the coast and people’s interaction with it Jon’s interpretation with his furniture is in a more abstracted form.

This exhibition provides an opportunity to stretch the boundaries of this collaborative effort to incorporate both forms of art and design in the same piece of work. In three of the pieces, Archipelago #3, Merge 1 and Rock pool, the artists merge furniture and painting producing an intimate and exciting approach to, and synthesis of, both mediums.

MERGE is on show at 1 on Park Art Gallery  till  June 1 at 1 Park Beach Rd Dodges Ferry which is open Tuesdays  to Sunday from 10am – 4pm, phone  6265 8050.
