| Trial cleanup program in Clarence |
|
A TRIAL graffiti removal project has been initiated by concerned Eastern Shore residents through the Clarence City Council because of an increasing level of graffiti and tagging in the neighbourhood.
Council and residents, together with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Community Youth Justice, decided to work together on developing a trial project in the community. The project has several aims, to: assist with the timely removal of graffiti and tagging in Clarence, through working with community volunteers that can engage with young people and be assigned graffiti removal tasks; allow young people who are involved in harming their community the opportunity to return something to their community, develop a relationship with those their actions harm and build positive links with others in their community; teach young people the impact of graffiti and tagging, and develop basic life and work skills which in turn will reduce recidivism. Over 12 weeks, young people will work alongside volunteers, to remove graffiti and tagging on council owned facilities. Work has already commenced at Wentworth Park and local reservoirs. Both the young people and volunteers are been doing an amazing job and working at lightening speed! If you see them around in your neighbourhood, say hello. If you are interested in finding out more about the project or helping out as a volunteer please call either Julie Andersson at Clarence City Council, on 6245 8780 or Mark Jessop at Community Youth Justice on 6230 7634.
