From entrees to dessert – in for the long haul

OUT with friends, The Mysteries, to Fritto Misto for lunch to have a look at the changes being brought in by John Mahindroo who has his hand firmly on the tiller in the kitchen, and his wife, Joan, is front of house. We had some smashing dishes. Entrees we tried were prawn pakoras, seasoned calamari and the poached prawn salad with mint, parsley, avocado, feta, tomatoes, olives and a basil mayonnaise.

They were all excellent, so, settled in for the long haul with the main courses, relaxing looking over the bay and watching the birds. Lots of people were dropping in just for coffee and cake, and the lounge area was very busy. The cake selections are pretty incredible too.

To the mains, and I had fish of the moment, which on the day was blue eye wrapped in smoked salmon, spinach, pumpkin mash and lemon butter. Jocelyn, a recently qualified chef, had cooked the fish to perfection. It was moist, succulent and a real treat.

The crispy skinned lamb rump steak with roast root vegetables, and minted yoghurt dressing was a knock out. I know, because I nicked some of it. The chicken medallions with mushroom risotto was another choice on the table.

The mushroom risotto was a brilliant accompaniment to the chicken. All the dishes were presented beautifully, showing off their blends of flavours a treat.

Until, heaven help me, my favourite dessert was on the menu! Lemon curd tart. This one featured a mixed berry sorbet with fruit coulis. It also had a toffee tiara on top. This was also a knockout to eat, the sorbet working beautifully with the lemon curd. I waddled back to the car, and the only needs at dinner that night were plain biscuits with tomatoes from the garden.

The Autumn menu kicks off this month, and the lamb dish will still be there. Some of the other dishes are chicken pakoras, panfried Kefalogravaria cheese (which is smashing), whole king prawns with a white bean skordalia, Pirates Bay octopus on a garlic bruschetta, and pesto marinated chickenbreast served with a tomato and brie tart, spinach and a rich jus

Other goodies on the new dessert list (which is called Are You Sweet Enough?) are sticky date pudding, espresso toffee creme brulee, grand marnier panna cotta, strawberry zucotto or a dark and white chocolate marquise.

WAMMY, the Judge and I went to this little place for lunch. We went all traditionally French! Coq au Vin, Navarin of Lamb, asparagus and prosciutto, with sides of potatoes and garlic bread. With a dessert for the Judge, drinks, coffee and loaves of bread to go, it was a cheap lunch at $25 a head. The bread I took home was fantastic. For breakfast the next day I loaded up a slice with tomatoes and basil from the garden. Yum.

IT was a pretty rotten, wet and cold day, so the Dragon and I went to Segreto for lunch. Just what you need on a vile day - comfort food. The Dragon ordered veal patties (made in-house) and I had marinated calamari with semi-dried tomato and basil risotto. We ordered a glass of Devil's Corner pinot gris to go with it and it all worked a treat. The veal patties were the standout. A lot of time and effort had gone into attaining the very authentic southern Italian style of veal patties - Marti doesn't add breadcrumbs (to keep them gluten free). The texture, for want of a better word, was rustic. Totally delicious.

AND it was off to trivia night at the Republic. Dan, our quiz master, had wrecked my ambitions, and had become a married man! The G ordered the Jack Daniels steak, I ordered the crumbed veal with a risotto cake flavoured with lemon and thyme, Zigstar and Uncle G ordered the Cajun fish and salad, and we all had a smashing meal. Quizzing? We were pretty rotten, actually. At least the meals were right at the top end of the good pub food list. I also had their $10 pie special (chicken and brie with salad and chips) last month, and it was very good value.
