| Clarence Council backs draft youth plan |

CLARENCE City Council has endorsed a draft youth plan for 2008-2012 to provide a practical direction for Council to meet the needs of young people in the city.
Clarence Mayor Jock Campbell said young people aged between 12-25 years made up 19 per cent of the Clarence’s population and it was essential to support the city’s youth. “Part of Council’s role is to support youth by enhancing the services and infrastructure it provides to young people,” Ald Campbell said. “We have developed a realistic Plan that reflects the needs of our youth. This strategic five year plan offers clear review timelines and annual progress reports funded by Council’s annual plan and capital works program.” Council undertook extensive community consultation with young people, community groups and key service providers, in developing the plan. “This involved the use of focus groups and surveying 448 young people in schools, colleges, youth service providers, community groups, shopping centres and at youth events,” Ald Campbell said. “Council’s Youth Network Advisory Group (YNAG) has also played a key role in developing the Plan. This group of young people provided input into the design and development of the youth survey and assisted in its distribution and planning.” Ald Campbell said the survey results identified that being active and engaged, participating in the life of the city, shaping the future, and health and wellbeing were the most important issues for young people. The draft youth plan has been released for further feedback from the community, relevant groups and Government agencies before a final plan is adopted.
