When Pat’s at work, she’s an open book
By TIFFANY SPIERS

PAT Lyden, who’s become a household word on the Eastern Shore, has been running her second hand bookshop for nearly 10 years and is showing no signs of slowing down.

“The bookshop, Pat’s Books, has continuously become bigger and bigger since I first opened in August 1998. I began with around 3500 books and now stock close to 10,000 books on my shelves,” Pat Lyden said.

Pat’s shop is certainly a treasure trove of magnificent books, from children’s literature, wonderful travel tips to delve into to the latest in fiction thrillers.

“I have always loved reading and had an interest in books, but I had no idea that I would end up running a bookshop. I used to work for the Brisbane Police Industrial Union for 10 years prior to moving to Tassie, but now I have a different change of pace,” Pat said.

Pat attracts a variety of customers to her store, in her words “a lot of ladies, a lot of men, and a lot of children.”

“My shop is near a nursing home on Franklin Street in Lindisfarne, so I have many older customers who like to visit and have a browse.

“The older customers love reading titles from Tasmanian author, Reg Watson. He writes about true crime stories that happened in Tasmania and he is very popular. In fact I have been told that I sell more of his books than any other bookshop in Hobart.

Pat’s most consistently popular authors are Michael Connelly, James Patterson, Laura Roberts, Karen Slaughter, Wilbur Smith and Clive Cussler.

“But the ones that people really want at the moment are J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series. I only have one of her books in stock at the moment, and customers tend to love anything written by Robert Jordan.

Pat’s Bookshop operates on a swap or sell process. For really popular books she will offer cash, but for less popular books Pat offers half the marked price of the book in credit, and customers can buy or swap as often as they like.

“The one thing I love most about owning a second hand bookshop is all the different people I get to meet. They are terrific. I sell a lot of new age products too and I have a really big clientele for those things, which makes my day very interesting.

“My personal favourite authors are Norah Roberts and Terri Persons, I absolutely love anything written about King Arthur and Merlin, but I’d never bring them to my shop as they are part of my own special collection.

“Anyone who is interested in selling or swapping their books, don’t forget to visit Pat.

“I trade most things, but I like to swap in small amounts at a time, it can be hard sorting through big boxes of books, after all I am only a one-person operation.

“My bookshop is really a lovely shop and a lovely area. I love going to work every day and the people are great. Pat’s Bookshop will continue running for a long time yet,” Pat said.
