THE City of Clarence Australia Day citizens’ awards celebrated Eastern Shore people and events that have made a positive impact locally, nationally and internationally. ![]() Getting into the Australia Day spirit, from left Jordan Pinnell of Queensland, Zak Waddle of Lauderdale and Bree Pinnell of Queensland flying the flag. The dedicated contribution of a dedicated foster mother, who is also involved in work for the aged and those in hospital, was honoured along side the determination of English Channel swimmer Anne Steele, and the Tassie Devils historic victory in the Pura Cup final in March 2007. In his Australia Day address the Mayor of Clarence Jock Campbell recalled the words of Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery at the recent Australia Day launch. “The Governor-General said that he hoped Australians would take time to care for one another and their communities. All of the 2008 Australia Day nominees are excellent examples of this caring activity,” Ald Campbell said. Ald Campbell said that Clarence’s Australia Day citizens awards’ panel had been amazed by the depth and breadth of contributions made by the nominees. “I am not exaggerating when I say that the 2008 selection process was the most difficult the panel has ever faced,” he said. The Mayor also welcomed 16 new Australian citizens in a citizenship ceremony held as part of the Clarence Australia Day breakfast on the Bellerive Boardwalk. Aside from the well-attended ceremonies, the large crowd was entertained by African group Fabio Chivhanda and the Jive Masters and the Burundian Women Dancers.
