THE refurbished majestic Wirksworth House in Bellerive was opened recently by Michelle O’Byrne Minister for Community Development. The beautifully-restored Victorian property will now accommodate Sport and Recreation Tasmanian staff and programs, giving athletes local access to sports science testing in the sport performance laboratory. ![]() Minister for Sport and Recreation Michelle O’Byrne with TIS talent search coordinator Emily Parker. After significant community consultation, the State Government provided $1.1 million to refurbish the building after it became clear that Wirksworth required major restoration. Particular care has been taken in the renovations to preserve the original unique features, such as the blackwood staircase and it’s ornate lacework veranda. With important heritage significance to Tasmania and the Eastern shore, Wirksworth has been host to many sport-related holiday activities, school camps, sports teacher education and sport training clinics. By providing a significant investment in this historic Tasmanian building the State Government aims to enhance the pursuit of individual health and wellbeing for Tasmanians.
