Smolt, 2 Salamanca Square, 6224 2554
I WENT to this new venture three times last month. What a great space in the Square. One of the ‘small plates’ is grilled asparagus with beetroot and goat’s cheese ($6.50). It was so good that I ordered it again on my second visit. The Tassal salmon with dukkah,
cucumber and labrie ($8.30) was delicious too. We ordered a share plate of seafood antipasti. It was a knockout. Oysters, mussels, pippies and we were happy diners. On another visit the crumbed latchet and pink eye wedges was really good, as was a cauliflower risotto. It pays to go with a big group (as in my case) because you get to taste lots of different things if your fellow diners don't mind you jumping in with your fork. The crumbed eggplant, the Spanish-style wedges, the pickled octopus and a luscious dessert of meringue roulade with marinated strawberries were all despatched quickly. I hope that Scott McMurray's team stays running as smoothly as they were on my visits. Big pats on backs to all staff.
