THE Australian Women's Weekly KITCHEN  Favourite Recipes and Advice from the AWW Test Kitchen (publisher: ACP Books)

This hard cover, big blue book is one of the most important Australian books about food ever produced here. At 687 pages it is one of the biggest as well.

It weighs just over 5 lbs (yes, my scales are that old). This is not just a book for someone on L plates in the kitchen; it is a fine addition to everyone's collection, but should live on a bookshelf and not in the kitchen!

If you are planning a new kitchen, there is some marvellous advice on how to use space well, planning layout, equipment and rubbish disposal. You will find information on everything to do with the maintenance of equipment, use of different utensils, recipes, and so much information that it is fantastic.

All recipes are triple tested, from the old favourites to more modern cooking styles, and reading the recipe titles in the index is enough to get you roaring into the kitchen to cook. You can't ask for more than that.

I recommend it as the best present for someone you know who loves the kitchen and cooking. At $74.95, it is really a bargain.
