Leadlighting’s popularity increasing in modern design
LEADLIGHT specialist Ruth Morley, whose studio ’Morley Leadlights’ is on South Arm Road at Rokeby, says the craft is becoming increasingly popular in some of today’s ultra-modern, architecturally-designed homes. “It’s interesting to see that an age-old craft is adding beauty to some of our most modern homes.  I am increasingly commissioned to do more panels, doors, cabinets and similar inserts for home-owners, many of them for newly built homes.

“Many of the designs that I am doing translate into a modern home particularly some of the tranquil sea scenes, colourful abstracts and other art nouveau,” Ruth said.

Ruth is happy to make up designs for a dedicated area and likes to work in both traditional and contemporary styles.  Repairs and insurance work are another part of Ruth’s work in leadlight.

With her workshop within the studio, you can actually watch her work while browsing through some of the magnificent artworks such as paneled mirrors, lampshades and striking sun catchers.  The studio has a veritable feast of works for the home or as gifts.

Celebrating 12 months at the Rokeby site this month, Morley Leadlights stock a large range of supplies such as art glass, grinders, tools, lead, glass rods and bevels.  Ruth said that a lot of her customers are glass artists and enthusiasts who welcome a shop on the eastern shore for their supplies.

Ruth teaches leadlighting at Adult Ed and admits that there is a strong interest in the craft.  She also offers one-on-one tuition at her studio with the first hour free for beginners! “It’s a wonderful craft to become involved with and can be extremely rewarding,” Ruth said.
