India Wellard, Kelsea Bain. Madeline Gray (all grade 5) and Emma Stephenson ( grade 6) formed this group with the aim of raising money for organisations that strongly support the welfare and health of others.

Principal Steven Hay said that each term during the school year the girls nominate a group to fundraise for and set about organising fun activities selling products to bring about greater awareness and funds for the specific cause.

Last term the group focused on Daffodil Day to raise funds for the Cancer Council. The Sunshine Girls sold yellow jelly cakes, yellow jelly, daffodils, Daffodil Day merchandising and held a poster competition to students at Bellerive Primary School and to the general public at Eastlands Shopping Centre. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found out more about others.

“People are so generous and really want to help others less fortunate than themselves,” said India following the Eastlands visit.

Through the fantastic efforts of the girls $475 was raised and a cheque for this amount was presented to Lisa Burstall from the Cancer Council at a recent assembly. She warmly congratulated the girls for their efforts and community spirit.

This term the girls will be supporting  Surf Lifesaving Tasmania and be arranging a wide array of beach activities on Boardies Day , October 19 at Bellerive Beach. All students at the school will be encouraged to wear board shorts on this day and make a donation to support this organisation.
