| History and fun combine at the Seafarer’s Festival |
THE Clarence Seafarer’s Festival, a day long, free event that promotes seafaring fun, education and entertainment, returns to the Bellerive Boardwalk on Sunday 28 October from 10.30am to 4pm.

The chameleons of the Seafarers Festival, the Red Hot Cols (Colin Dean and Andrew Colrain), will introduce a host of musicians and performers on the Stage of the Bay. At 1.45pm, the Festival audience will be treated to a performance of the interactive theatre production The Ship That Never Was. Written by Richard Davey and produced by The Round Earth Company, The Ship That Never Was is the story of an amazing convict escape from Sarah Island with an intriguing twist. Described by author and ABC personality Tim Bowden as an exciting and dramatic theatrical experience that is not to be missed, The Ship That Never Was is rarely performed outside of Strahan. Alderman Chipman encouraged children to become involved in this year’s Festival by joining in the competitions that offer great prizes. “Boys and girls are invited to dress up as convicts or captains, sailors or settlers for the Seafarin’ Costume Competition that will be judged at 2.20pm. The popular Treasure Hunt is on again and will be drawn at 3.15pm and as usual, free craft activities and face painting will be on site,” Alderman Chipman said. This year the Seafarer’s Festival will have a colouring-in competition for under 13s. The picture must be collected from the Telstra Shop in Eastlands and returned to the shop or to the Clarence Events Stall by 11.30am on the day of the festival. Once again, there will be a range of traditional and quirky races in Kangaroo Bay, featuring outrigger canoes, dragon boats, surf boats and 18-foot clinkers. The Seafarer’s Festival also presents a range of maritime information stalls, from Ocean Watch and Surf Life Saving to the University’s Marine Science Centre and Sea Rescue Tasmania. Patrons will be able to watch a cray pot being made, catch a ’fish’ in the Fish Care Tasmania pool or take a short trip aboard the traditional Tasmanian cray fishing vessel FV Kamada.
