| Strong field for Eastern Shore councils in this month’s elections |

THIS month’s local government elections have attracted a strong field of candidates vying for the top positions in the three Eastern Shore Councils, Clarence, Sorell and Tasman. Ballots, which are currently being sent to residents, must be returned to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission by the end of the month. In Clarence, two candidates are standing for the mayoral position, seven candidates are standing for deputy mayor and 13 candidates are standing for a possible six council positions. For Mayor, the candidates are the incumbent Jock Campbell of Sandford and new candidate Peter Cooper of Bellerive. For Deputy Mayor the candidates are current Deputy Mayor Martin McManus of Lindisfarne along with current councillors, Doug Chipman of Bellerive, Beverley Evans of Lenah Valley, Richard James of Lindisfarne, Tony Mulder of Bellerive, John Peers of Rose Bay and David Traynor of Cremorne. The candidates for council are Peter Cooper, Don Cusick of Rose Bay, David Eddington of Richmond, Beverley Evans, David Jackson of Bellerive, Richard James, Greg Keane of Rokeby, Kim Peart of Montagu Bay, John Peers, Dianne Snowden of Richmond, David Traynor, Sharyn von Bertouch of Sandford, Jurriaan Willink of Acton Park. In Sorell, three candidates are standing for Mayor, one for Deputy Mayor and seven for five council positions. For Mayor, the candidates are the incumbent, Carmel Torenius of Forcett, Mike Purdon of Sorell and John the Duke of Avram of Sorell. Graeme Evans of Sorell has been elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor. For council, the candidates are Lisa Cuatt of Bream Creek, Bryan Dean of Midway Point, James Dunbabin of Bream Creek, Graeme Evans, Brett McDonald of Primrose Sands, John the Duke of Avram and Judy Young of Dunalley. The Tasman municipality has attracted equally strong interest with two candidates for the mayoral position, two candidates for the deputy mayor and 11 candidates for five council positions. For Mayor the candidates are the incumbent Roger Self of Eaglehawk Neck and Jan Barwick of White Beach. For Deputy Mayor the candidates are the incumbent Gary Alexander of Nubeena and Roseanne Heyward of Koonya. Those standing for council are Gary Alexander, Allen Briggs of Port Arthur, Beverley Ewins, John Fazackerley of Nubeena, Pam Fenerty of Eaglehawk Neck, John Forster of White Beach, Wally Lyne of Port Arthur, Denis Mermet of Port Arthur, Dave Moser of Eaglehawk Neck, James Noye of Premaydena, Glenn Skeggs of White Beach.
