Wildcats look for permanent Eastern Shore home
CLARENCE Deputy Mayor Martin McManus has welcomed the return of the Wildcats Gymnastics club to the Eastern Shore but says a purpose-built facility is now urgently needed.

The club relocated to the western shore when a suitable home for the club could not be found in Clarence. After more than two years, a temporary home has been found at City Gate in Mornington but time is limited.

The club has a $300,000 commitment for partial funding from the Tasmanian Government, and a site for a purpose-built facility has been agreed to by the Clarence Council.

“What is required now is a regional partnership agreement with the Australian Government to secure the funding needed to make the project happen,”Ald McManus said.

“Since its formation approximately 10 years ago the club has provided a tremendous opportunity for the development of gymnastics.”

Since returning to Clarence last month, the club is receiving approximately 70 inquiries a week and its temporary home at City Gate will only allow a membership of 350.  The club has the coaching expertise and programs to cater for up to 600 members, a realistic membership level according to coach Charles Minster.

As well as the provision for gymnastics inquiries are also being made for the inclusion of ‘dry diving’ training facilities in the new gymnasium.

“With a purpose-built facility the club will be able to cater for approximately 600.  We will be able to offer a range of programs including opportunities for schools to become involved,” Charles Minster said.

Clarence Council has identified land adjacent to North Warrane Oval for a gymnasium.

“Locating a gym club there will further enhance the sport and recreation use of the area.  Currently cricket, rugby and soccer use the ground and adjoining facilities.  Adding a gymnasium has the potential to benefit the existing codes as well,” Ald McManus said.

“It is to be hoped that the detail of the regional partnership agreement can be completed soon and an agreement signed so that the facility can be built as soon a possible.”
