Soho Hotel, 124 Davey St, Hobart 6224 9494
SOHO Hotel (formerly the Aberfeldy) in Davey Street for lunch with the redoubtable Mrs Betty Jones, prolific letter writer. I believe the Soho Hotel has a few problems. It's not to be muddled up with Michael Prosser's South Hobart Soho Cafe, opening soon.

We were, initially, the only two diners at the pub – and there were three staff about the place. We waited 25 minutes for a drink, and then a further half an hour for our lunches - crumbed scallops for Mrs J and a rare rump for me.

Mrs J won hands down on the scallops. The rump, however, was a bit sad. The waitperson asked me if I would like a sauce, so I opted for the mushroom sauce. Still waiting for that to arrive! The vegetables were excellent – steamed cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and zucchini.

Two other diners arrived after us and had drinks and meals in an inkling, so I have no idea why they were so tardy with Mrs J and me. Mrs J and one of her friends returned a week later and had a totally delightful meal with exceptionally good service. Maybe I was just unlucky, but after Mrs J's pleasant experience, I am looking forward to a return visit.
