Blossom emerging and so is the blossom
By SALLY RILEY*

IT is spring at last, after a long cold winter what a relief! But not for everyone. Already some are complaining of itchy eyes, congested sinuses and runny noses. The blossom is emerging , particularly the early wattles and the wind carries loose pollen into the air and into our lungs.
Help is at hand. There are a number of herbs that may alleviate these trying conditions.

Albizia lebbeck and Baical skullcap - Scutellaria baicalensis: both anti allergic and anti-inflammatory herbs especially useful for the allergic rhinitis which is associated with hay fever.

Eyebright-Euphrasia officinalis: Relieves conjunctivitis, itchy eyes and reduces upper respiratory secretions, catarrh and sinusitis.

Golden seal-Hydrastis canadensis: was originally a native American medicinal herb. In recent years it has been over harvested but commercial cultivation has helped alleviate the shortage. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. It is particularly useful for disorders and infections of mucous membranes. It must not be used if pregnant.

Stress may exacerbate these conditions. In such cases nervine or tonic herbs could be appropriate.

Steam inhalations can help clear the congestion. Five drops of thyme or eucalyptus oil added to one litre of hot water, then a towel over your head and inhale for 10 minutes.

Diet is often a contributing factor especially foods that encourage mucous production such as dairy products, sugars and alcohol. These should be avoided by those susceptible to attacks.

Doses for herbs should always be checked with a professional health practitioner as therapeutic doses vary for each herb and some have cautions for certain health conditions.
