Clarence bicycle plan open for public consultation
CLARENCE City Council has approved a draft action plan for public consultation to enhance cycling infrastructure in Clarence.  The plan was prepared by the Clarence bicycle advisory committee in conjunction with Cycling South.

Clarence Mayor Jock Campbell said the purpose of the plan was to encourage provision of infrastructure to ensure that cycling in the area was safe, viable, beneficial and an attractive long-term recreational and commuter option.

Ald Campbell said the plan identified key issues that needed to be investigated and supported some of the objectives included in Council’s recently adopted Strategic Plan 2006-2011.

“The plan will also confirm the issues and routes critical to development of cycling in Clarence and determine which projects best satisfy the issues raised by the community for the next 10 years.”

Ald Campbell said while there had already been some initial consultation about the action plan, there was still a need for broad community consultation.

“The initial draft was developed together with Cycling South, feedback from residents and the Clarence bicycle advisory committee,” he said

“However we are keen to hear the community’s views regarding the plan.”

The consultation process will also include discussions with external agencies such as the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania and other major non-governmental organisation stakeholders.

Any projects arising out of the action plan will be subject to further Council consideration as part of the Council’s capital works program in future annual plans.

The draft plan will be placed on public exhibition until September 28 following which it will be reviewed in light of the comments received before a final plan is presented to Council for adoption.
