| Bellerive Beach to be closed to dogs – draft plan |
|
CLARENCE City Council is inviting community feedback on its draft dog management policy for the city, which will see changes to dog exercise areas including the prohibition of dog walking on Bellerive Beach. Clarence Mayor Jock Campbell said the Dog Control Act 2000 required council to review its policy every five years. “As part of the development of Clarence’s dog management policy, council will consider any public submissions received during the consultation period before it adopts its final policy,” Ald Campbell said. The draft proposes that Bellerive Beach will be a prohibited area for dog walkers. “Dogs will be prohibited from the Bellerive Beach at all times as council has recognised it as one of the most popular family beaches in Clarence. The same restrictions will be applied to Richmond Village Green which reflects the traditional use of this area,” he said. A new off-lead area is proposed for Oakdowns to meet the needs of the growing community in the region. Ald Campbell said the new policy also incorporated several changes including simplification of the fee structure as well as an extension of council’s free first year registration offer to dogs adopted from the Dog’s Home, to also include dogs adopted from the RSPCA. “In addition, Council is offering a life-long 50 per cent discount on the registration of dogs that have successfully completed grade four obedience training and the fee for replacement dog tags has been reduced from $10 to $5.” Clarence’s dog management policy will now be placed on public display until Friday, 14 September, following which it will be reviewed in light of comments received before a final policy is presented to Council for adoption. The revised policy and feedback forms are also available on Council’s web site.
