Lauderdale Primary participates in national tree day |
THE Minister for Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Paula Wriedt, was a keen participant in national tree day recently at Lauderdale Primary School.
Education Minister Paula Wriedt with one of the competition winners, Sophie Ambler. Taking part in the school’s tree day Ms Wriedt said planting and nurturing trees represented a wonderful opportunity to help young people learn about the value of caring for the environment.
Ms Wriedt congratulated the school for its participation in the event run by Planet Ark.
“Lauderdale Primary has been enhanced with the addition of 160 native trees and shrubs and I welcome the school’s commitment to continue its tree planting program,” Ms Wriedt said.
“Staff, students and parents will work with Planet Ark to ensure the extensive school grounds feature a variety of attractive native shrubs.”
Ms Wriedt commended Lauderdale Primary students Sophie Ambler and Jasmine Meyer who helped initiate the school’s involvement in the program.
The two girls won a water conservation poster competition and part of their prize was a voucher for 160 native trees and shrubs.
“As well as being an excellent exercise to teach young people to care for the environment, tree planting helps to address issues such as salinity, improves water quality and provides a habitat for native birds and animals,” Ms Wriedt said.
“And the experts tell us that 17 mixed species trees will absorb the greenhouse gases a car produces in one year.
Ms Wriedt said that initiatives such as these align with the recently launched Schools Environment Challenge. The Up2me for kids @ school website is a component of the successful web-based environment challenge, a partnership between the State Government and Sustainable Living Tasmania.
The new website shows students how they can adopt more sustainable environmental practices in their schools. The environment challenge for schools can be found at www.Up2meforkids.com.au
