United we stand says Clarence United FC
‘WE'RE from the Eastern Shore!’ are the first words teams from the Clarence United FC belt out in their victory song.

We are of course talking about football Socceroo style (that’s a round ball, referees, a netted goal and not to be confused with AFL). Following the national and international scene football in Tasmania is now governed by the Football Federation Tasmania replacing the former Soccer Tasmania organisation.

Clarence United FC has been a hub for all things football since 1978 when the Phoenix Rovers Soccer Club was established. Although the name Clarence United was officially adopted in the late 1990s, the image of the phoenix remains as the club logo in recognition of its history.

Clarence United FC has the distinctive position of being the only Southern Premier League club (out of 10) to be based on the Eastern Shore.

As much as this works to the club’s benefit, keeping up with the demand for football at all levels is a major challenge facing the club in the coming years. This year the club is bursting at the seams with more than 500 registered players which make up 24 youth teams and 10 adult teams (for both men and women).

Behind the scenes there are approximately 45 Officials (including committee members, coaches, managers, and trainers). What is harder to quantify are the numerous volunteers who give up their time during the season to work the barbecue, the canteen, help organise social functions, and wash strips week in week out. For all those involved, however, the rewards far outweigh the work as the club is a thriving football community with a strong social and family philosophy.

Support from the wider business community is a driving factor behind the success of the club and much of the club sponsorship comes from local business.

The Clarence United FC committee is working with the Clarence City Council to manage and develop solutions around the issue of ground shortages as the demand for facilities increases. Last month the club announced the appointment of Clarence Mayor Jock Campbell as its patron.

There is always plenty of action over the winter weekends at Wentworth Park – the home ground for the club – so call in and see Eastern Shore’s finest playing their favourite game.
