RISDON Vale Volunteer Fire Brigade has received accolades for ts proficiency by winning a special award recently.
The award was for the most proficient brigade at the Derwent Group Exercise, held in early June, involving approximately 80 volunteer firefighters and 22 vehicles. It was presented by acting district officer Ian Cawthorn and Derwent group officer Lyndsay Suhr at Risdon Vale’s recent Brigade meeting. It was a familiarisation exercise, part of the Derwent Group area and covered map reading, relay pumping, and observation. Derwent Group is made up of volunteer brigades from Risdon Vale, Rokeby, Old Beach, Bridgewater, Claremont, Wellington, Mt Nelson, Taroona, Fern Tree, Lenah Valley, Wellington, Collinsvale, and Molesworth. Local parliamentarians, too, have joined together to support the Risdon Vale Brigade, with donations to support the purchase of some much-needed equipment. Federal Liberal candidate for Franklin Vanessa Goodwin attended the meeting and presented cheques of $300 each to Risdon Vale First Officer Wade Stewart on behalf of Harry Quick MHR and Tasmanian Senator Paul Calvert. “Harry Quick’s donation was to help purchase GPS units and Senator Calvert’s went to support the acquisition of UHF handheld radios,” Ms Goodwin said. “The GPS (Global Positioning System) units will be utilised to map vegetation and bush fires, send exact positioning and assist with location of map co-ordinates when assisting other brigades in unfamiliar locations,” Mr Stewart said. “The UHF handheld radios will assist in ground firefighting operations, ensuring communication is present between vehicles and ground crews. “The Group Exercise is always a good opportunity for brigades, not from that area, to get to know the terrain, fire trails, location of water sources, and build on team orientated network of volunteer firefighters,” he added. After the presentation and meeting, First Officer Stewart afforded Ms Goodwin an inspection of the Brigade’s headquarters and its equipment and resources.
