Turning the heat up on the winter blues

By STUART SLADE*

ALTHOUGH it may be a bit chilly outside the Clarence Aquatic Centre YMCA is providing a great place to swim during the winter months. The water temperature is running at a delightful 28 degrees, the Centre air temperature is 25 degrees and the change rooms are at a warm and cosy 30 degrees. In all it makes the perfect excuse to swim some laps or join our YMCA Aquasafe aquatic education program.

Term two has already started but that doesn’t mean your child has missed out. Simply contact the Centre on 6244 2294 to book for an assessment which will show the most suitable level for your child to be in and they can commence learning to swim at any time.

The Clarence Aquatic Centre YMCA offers aquatic education to everyone from three years to adults and children with special needs. For those children who want to take swimming seriously we have a new and exciting recently formed senior squad swimming club with Graeme Williams as our fun and friendly coach. Masters Water Polo is continuing to be extremely popular at the Clarence Aquatic Centre YMCA. It is held every Wednesday evening at the Centre from 7 – 8 pm and is attracting former water polo players and people interested in trying the sport.

The competition is based on a come and try format, where players who turn up are placed into teams. This avoids players having to commit to a competition with regular rosters. The game is slightly modified to encourage greater player involvement and includes such rules as no contact in the two-metre area, mixed teams of male and female participants and four, eight-minute quarters. Costs have been kept to a minimum with an entry fee of only $5 per evening and no registration fees. *Stuart Slade is CEO of Hobart YMCA
