By SALLY RILEY* HERBS are the gentle alternative for every day ailments and have been Echinacea purpurea: For the treatment of upper respiratory infections and especially helpful in those with weakened immunity. Allium sativum: (Garlic): It is an expectorant and is beneficial in bouts of acute or chronic bronchitis. It has cholesterol-lowering activity and kills bad bacteria in the gut. It may also assist in the reduction of high blood pressure. Eleutherococcus senticosus or Siberian ginseng: This herb boosts energy levels and stamina, particularly after illness. Doses for herbs should always be checked with a professional health practitioner as therapeutic doses vary for each herb and some have cautions for certain health conditions. *Sally Riley is available at the Midway Point Community centre on Tuesday 12-3pm phone 0407 872 792.
