Winter’s the perfect excuse for a warming beef casserole
Written by Beverly Brill

WITH winter on upon us it’s time to rethink the menu with modern meals that warm the palate and indulge our senses. While beef is tender and delicious all year round, the cooler weather brings the perfect excuse to enjoy rich and comforting casseroles.

Nando’s peri peri is very very good
Written by Beverley Brill
Nando's Eastlands Entertainment Centre 7 - 9 Bligh Street Rosny 6244 3165

THIS is fairly new to the Eastern Shore. Its ‘older"’ sister establishment is in North Hobart. I was going to a film, so dropped in to try the Nando Chicken Wrap
($6.50). They bill themselves as peri-peri chicken restaurants (and they seem to be everywhere in Victoria), and the flame-grilled chicken comes with various levels of heat. Starting with lemon and herb and going through mild, hot and extra hot, the choice is yours. The place was busy, with many contented diners.

You can dine indoors or outdoors, and on a glorious autumn day, it was a pleasure to sit outside.

They also serve various chicken burgers (which are not for the faint-hearted) and they cater to vegetarians with burgers or pitas. You can choose from four different salads and there are nine different side dishes. They only serve two desserts, a chocolate mousse ($3.95) or panatas, a Portuguese custard tart ($3.25). There are also four different ‘hatchling’ meals for children.

On a follow up visit I ordered the quarter chicken, again, lemon and herb ($5.50) with coleslaw ($3.50).  It was tremendous value and screamingly delicious. Some of the Rosny College students were there, outdoing each other with the peri peri sauce on their chicken. This sauce is, apparently, a real blaster. They can also cater for one large group on the banquette and chairs.(There would be room for about 20 - with a few skinny minnies or mickies on the banquette side).

There are also twos and fours in the table arrangements. Ask about their outside catering. Smiling staff, happy customers - such a change from its previous incarnation as a Korean restaurant.

WE all enjoy the addition of ginger to our foods but it is worth looking at some of its history particularly its medicinal values.

Cheapies that are worth a visit

Lindisfarne Motor Inn have an excellent Mother’s Day lunch, three table served courses for $36.  Great value.

Beltana Hotel had a new chef last time I was there with Lady Letitia and Dashing Dale from the Sunshine Club for dinner. The meals, especially the $11 specials, were all good value and tasted great.

Tokyo Seoul in Mayfair in the Bay, Sandy Bay. I picked up some prawn and avocado sushi rolls for my daughter who was recovering from  knee surgery, had graduated with her PhD (well, you have to have a bit of a brag) and was about to go to the UK, and the food is tremendous value for takeaway, but even better if you eat in and have ‘all you can eat’ at lunch for $13.50 which includes miso soup.

Dumpling World
This is relatively new, it's in Collins Street opposite Harris Scarfe, and according to the White Pages on the internet, it doesn't have a phone. It's small, busy, and the prices are right. One of my daughters and I had the seafood dumplings - they were cheap as chips - and delicious!

Sakura, Liverpool St (next door to the Commonwealth Bank). Here you can get mixed sushi from $3 each, or you can order a plate of noodles and mixed dishes. My favourite from the sushi offerings is the prawn and avocado, and at $3.50 it is a bargain.

Kebab Masters, Food Court at Centro, beside Harris Scarfe. You get a choice of chicken, beef, vegetarian, falafel or lamb kebab, served with a choice of toppings. My favourite is the yoghurt and garlic. The best thing about this place is you get to choose your fillings - lettuce, tomato, onion, tabouli, cheese, houmus and carrot. Wrapped up in pita bread, it is a healthy and cheap lunch at $7. Keep your motor running after lunch!
